Following financial support kindly provided by OPAP, Greek Organisation of Football Prognostics SA, the European Institute (EI) invites current Masters and PhD students registered at a Greek university to apply for a scholarship to enable them to attend LSE for their studies, for one term.

Scholarship value and duration

The value of each scholarship will be approximately £5,000 in total for the full period. The LSE study fee will be covered separately by the OPAP scholarship and will not be borne by the student. Students receiving a scholarship must be resident in London and attend LSE full-time and continuously for the duration of the Lent Term (13 January to 21 March 2014).

The scholarship’s programme of studies 

Masters Students
Masters students will take two European Institute MSc course units. One of the courses must be EU423 Greece and the European Union, and/or EU434 The Political Economy of Southeast Europe. The second course will be chosen by the student but is subject to availability and with the approval of their Academic Advisor. Each course will be assessed by LSE staff. Students will also have the option of taking an additional project (e.g. extended essay) for their home university, for which advice may be given by LSE staff. The choice of courses must be agreed with their Academic Advisor.
Students applying for an OPAP scholarship must state what their second course choice will be, plus two reserve choices, along with their application.

Students receiving an OPAP scholarship will not graduate from LSE; rather, they will receive an official statement of their course grade.

EI courses offered in Lent Term 2013/14

PhD Students
PhD students will not take any courses whilst they are at LSE, but they will be assigned an Academic Advisor, whom they will see at least twice during their stay.

Eligibility and application procedure

There are two categories of students who can apply for the scholarships:

Students following a Masters’ programme in the social sciences related to the European Union and/or south-east (SE) Europe at a recognised Greek university;

Students in their second or third year of a PhD programme who are conducting research in political science, economics, or international relations, on a subject related to Greece and/or south-east (SE) Europe at a recognised Greek university.

To apply, a student must send:

• a current curriculum vitae (in English);
• their full contact details;
• a letter indicating their primary areas of academic interest in relation to the EU and/or SE Europe;
• a letter of recommendation from the academic director/supervisor of their Masters/PhD programme confirming their current registration and the compatibility of the intended studies at the LSE with their home programme.
  Where neither ‘European Union’ nor ‘South East Europe’ appears in the title of their Masters programme, the letter may make a case for the relevance of the student’s current studies to one or both of these foci;
• a transcript of their University grades to date (undergraduate and, if available, Masters) and a certificate confirming their proficiency in English. Scholarship holders will be asked to bring this documentation with them on arrival and will not be able to receive their funding until they have done so;
• MSc students must state which courses they are interested in taking during their stay;
• for PhD students, an English translation of their research proposal, of approximately 5 pages in length;
• for PhD students, a timetable stating where they are with their studies;
• students must post their applications and supporting documentation to:

• All materials must be received by the deadline. Incomplete or late applications will not be accepted. Only postal applications will be considered.

Complete applications must be submitted by Friday 22 November 2013. It is expected that candidates will be informed of the result of their application, via email, by 2 December 2013.

The interpretation of the above rules and the final selection will be made by LSE alone; no correspondence concerning an unsuccessful application will be entered into.
