The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the United Nations systems designated entity for addressing environmental issues at the global and regional level. Its mandate is to coordinate the development of environmental policy consensus by keeping the global environment under review and bringing emerging issues to the attention of governments and the international community for action.

UNEP’s Division of Environmental Policy Implementation (DEPI) works with international and national partners, providing technical assistance and advisory services for the implementation of environmental policy, and strengthening the environmental management capacity of developing countries and countries with economies in transition.

This post is located in UNEP/DEPI at the Athens duty station. Under delegated authority the Project Manager will coordinate and manage the SWITCH MED (switching to more sustainable consumption and production in the Mediterranean) policy component project funded by the European Union, which addresses the need in the Mediterranean to promote sustainable consumption and production (SCP) patterns in small and medium enterprises and resource efficiency. The incumbent will be responsible for following duties:

Responsibilities 1. Coordination and project management:

a.Participate in the Project Management Team
b. Develop a detailed workplan for the implementation of the project.
c. Ensuring preparation and follow-up of potential revisions in the wokplan and related budget.
d. Coordinate with focal points and within the UNEP/Mediterranean Action Plan network.
e. Coordinate amongst key implementing partners, Cleaner Production/Regional Activity Center and DTIE.
f. Coordinate with the respective European Commission services, effectively facilitating the internal progress of the necessary administrative procedures.
g. Organize an inception meeting, steering committee meetings as required.
h. Monitor project implementation in all stages.
i. Prepare SWITCH med inputs for UNEP/MAP relevant policy-making bodies and programmes.
j. Coordinate with Mediterranean SCP Expert Group (MSEG).
k. Facilitate the integration of the outputs from the MSEG. Coordinate communication with partners and external stakeholders.
l. Monitor the project budget and regularly update it.
m. Draft technical and financial reports according to the requirements of the SWITCH programme.
n. Draft project proposals to mobilize resources to finance on SWITCH MED related activities.

Communication: Speaks and writes clearly and effectively; listens to others, correctly interprets messages from others and responds appropriately; asks questions to clarify, and exhibits interest in having two-way communication; tailors language, tone, style and format to match audience; demonstrates openness in sharing information and keeping people informed.

Education Advanced university degree in environmental studies, sustainable development or related discipline. A first university degree in combination with qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced degree.

Work Experience A minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in environmental project or programme management or related area, including at least two (2) years at the international level. Languages English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the post advertised, fluency in oral and written English and a working knowledge of French are required. Knowledge of another UN official language is an advantage.

Assessment Method Evaluation of qualified candidates for this position will include a substantive assessment which will be followed by a competency-based interview.
